The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country are inviting families in Wolverhampton to go wild at a family fun day in Smestow Valley on Tuesday.

The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country are currently working on a project to improve the woodlands in the Barley Field area of Smestow Valley. As part of this and linking in with the Birmingham and Black Country Nature Improvement Area, they want children to come and get involved in learning about woodlands through games, craft activities and learning about nature.

By thinning dense areas of young planted woodland and introducing new plant and tree species, they hope to create attractive areas for people to enjoy and for wildlife to flourish.

Getting people to enjoy and feel a connection with the woodlands is just as important as making them better for biodiversity, as Simon Atkinson of The Wildlife Trust explains:

“We have had great support from local schools for this project already and we want to make sure that we give kids a chance to enjoy themselves during half-term, whilst also getting out and learning more about woodlands. Children are going to be the conservationists, politicians and business leaders of the future, so we need to make sure they understand how great woodlands are at a young age.”

The plantation in Barley Field in the Smestow Valley is relatively recent, like many others across the Black Country, so needs thinning to help existing trees to mature. This will also encourage the growth of native woodland flowers like bluebell, wood anemone and primrose with the help of seeds and seedlings which have been prepared for this purpose by The Wildlife Trust’s “Growing Local Flora” project.

The family fun day can be accessed from the reserve car park off Henwood Road, is from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Tuesday 17th February and has been organised as a drop-in session for families to come throughout the day.
