Smethwick Park Meadows

Creating a stepping-stone corridor of meadows through the heart of our region

Sitting at the centre of Birmingham and the Black Country the town of Smethwick was identified as a potential ecological corridor to link Sandwell Valley Country Park to the ancient countryside of Illey.

Working in partnership with Sandwell Council and the local community, we have now created new meadows in five formal parks in this heavily built-up and biodiversity poor area.

Green hay was brought to each of the prepared sites from Illey Pastures SSSI, situated in the borough of Dudley, just 6 km from Smethwick.

To ensure early impact annual cornfield species were sown at each of the sites which has helped gain support for further projects.

NIA partner Sandwell Council are now managing each of the new meadows.
