South Birmingham group launches

This Friday sees the launch of a new group in South Birmingham for nature lovers to get together for talks, walks and social events.

Peter Shirley MBE, Vice President of The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country, is giving the inaugural talk in October on the impact of nature conservation on urban wildlife. The well-known West Bromwich-based author and broadcaster was chosen as he was a founder of the local Wildlife Trust and has worked in nature conservation for many years.

Peter hopes that they will inspire more groups to start up across Birmingham and the Black Country. He said: “Urban wildlife is a fascinating subject that has often been overlooked in the mainstream media. We want to ensure that local people get the opportunity to learn more about what’s living around them and what can be done to protect the wonderful species that exist here already.

“Wildlife Trusts all over the country have local groups of enthusiasts who get together to share their knowledge and their passion for wildlife. This is a great tradition that we want to encourage here in Birmingham and the Black Country, so we can bring more like-minded people together.”

The group’s talks will run throughout the winter months and offer a great new way to find out more about local wildlife and meet new people. Over the summer next year there will be a programme of walks to introduce people to new places where wildlife is flourishing locally.

John Douglas, chair of the group, said, “We think it’s important to give local people the chance to find out about the wonderful wildlife all around them. We can do this by having knowledgeable speakers in the winter months, but also by taking people out to see it when, hopefully, the weather will be a little better.”

Meetings will be held every second Friday of the month at Dame Elizabeth Hall in Bournville. With entrance just £2.00, doors open 7pm for a 7:30pm start, and refreshments are available during all meetings.

The first two talks are:
Friday 10th October: Peter Shirley MBE talks about Urban Wildlife, and the impact of nature conservation.

Friday 14th November: A talk by Patrick Clement on The Magic of Moths
