Newts
Amphibians such as newts, frogs, toads are animals which have lungs and live on land for part of their lives but return to water each year to lay their eggs. Amphibians have two distinct phases of growth. The juvenile or "tadpole" phase is dependent on water, whereas the adult is land-living. The transition from tadpole to adult involves a complete reorganisation or metamorphosis of the body form.

Unusual Frog Mortality
There has been an apparent increase in recent years of cases of unusual deaths of frogs and toads, particularly in garden ponds. Most reports describe adult frogs dying over a period of several weeks. Typically they involve dozens and sometimes even hundreds or thousands of amphibians. The dying and dead frogs may or may not have obvious external symptoms (e.g. discoloured skin, ulcers, bleeding) but may appear lethargic and disorientated, particularly in and around the edges of ponds.
Fantastic Frogs & Tantalising Toads
The 20th century saw huge losses of ponds to development and changes in farming practices, sites vital to the survival of amphibians. The saviour of the common frog and toad has been the increase in the number of garden ponds, toad has been the increase in the number of garden ponds, providing an artificial alternative to these lost wildlife habitats.
