Top Hanger Plantations, Walsall

An insight into work supported by Birmingham & Black Country Nature Improvement Area to introduce a field-layer to Top Hanger Plantations, Walsall.

Top Hanger plantations comprise 8 hectares of young Hazel coppice woodland with scattered Oak standards which is managed by Walsall Countryside Services.  The plantations form an extension to, and link, the old species-rich woodlands of Cuckoo's Nook & The Dingle and Hay Head Wood.  The plantations were densly planted and there was very little field layer.

In 2012 the Growing Local Flora project collected seed and propagules from Cuckoo's Nook & The Dingle and Hay Head Wood.  This seed was sown into the plantations in Februry2013 along with Red Campion and Floxglove.

At the start of 2014 Bluebell seeds were also collected from Cuckoo's Nook & The Dingle and Hay Head Wood and were sown into the plantations by the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust.  Some coppicing of the plantation was also undertaken.  In addition, Hazel, Field Maple and Alder were also planted along the edge of the existing plantation by Walsall Countryside Services.

This project was part of an NIA objective to increase the floral enhancement of urban woodland in the Birmingham and Black Country area.
